José Luis me enseñó amistad, diversión, y complicidad.

Christmas 2020: Tears, Friendship and Hope

These past few weeks, I've been having the same thought over and over: how is Christmas going to be like this year? Will it be terribly sad, or will we be able to adapt? Families won't be able to come together for Christmas as they used to, nor will friends- at least not the responsible ones. Will the virus go through a new phase? Considering that a lot of people are fed up with it and will probably meet in large groups, this seems likely. So, I wonder: what is there to expect from Christmas 2020?

I know of a lot of people who are expecting nothing good from this Christmas. Many think it will be just plain sad and depressing, since they won't be seeing their families. Others think that considering all that has happened this year, there's nothing to celebrate for, that there's nothing good awaiting for us on Christmas. I can't say I blame them.

From a personal point of view, I wasn't looking forward celebrating the holiday this year. What for, I used to ask. My job has been taking a serious toll on my mental health, to the point where I'm considering going back to my psychologist. I feel my depression growing worse by the day, and I might be developing anxiety. My mom has been very supportive every day, but other relatives have been exhausting to deal with. My classes have been extremely hard, and I'm talking about the courses I'm studying; my time to rest and disconnect has been cut terribly short, my assignments are getting longer and harder, and I'm not getting enough sleep. My house has been running through a lot of problems, I'm struggling with some finances, and everything just seems to be getting out of my control- and that is terrifying for me.

I was really looking forward to something I could hold on to. Something that I could grasp and I wouldn't feel as if I was drowning by the second. During this process, I did find some things that helped: I read my books little by little, because now I don't have as much time as I used to before; I started trying new things such as television series I never saw before, such as "Supergirl", "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", "Titans", "The Boys" and "True Blood"; I've kept in touch with my three friends, sharing our tears, frustrations, struggles and the little hope we have left; and I've grown a little closer to my mom, because she's my rock and the one who holds me (sometimes literally) when my whole world is coming to pieces.

To summarize it, it hasn't been easy finding a little spark day by day. But then November arrived, and I saw all the Christmas decorations everywhere. Something sparked inside me then; I didn't know what it was then, but now I know it was related to Christmas.

I started planning something. I wanted to decorate my house this year, as I have never decorated it before. Nothing too fancy or extravagant, just something that felt nice and comfortable for me. I started looking more seriously at my expenses, so I could save some money for what I was planning. Just the idea of buying my own things for my house felt incredibly exciting. I got a small Christmas tree, some decorations (of which there will be more later), and a stuffed Grinch which I love to pieces. Today I'm actually planning on setting up the tree, which I admit makes me very happy.

So, what is it with Christmas and this tiny spark rising inside of me? It could be the pretty lights and beautiful decorations. Maybe it's about the joyful music all around me. Perhaps it's about the gifts, but not really; I don't care much about presents for myself. No... I think this spark is just for the pure joy of Christmas itself, and the promise of happiness that comes with it. The idea that everything will turn out alright, no matter what.

Christmas is about joy, peace, happiness, sharing and being grateful for our lives and every small blessing we have. Even though most things in this year have been pure trash, I still have some things I am grateful for:

1- My friends, whom I love with my life.

2- My mom, who has been there from the start and is one of the main reasons why I'm still here.

3- The fact that my family and friends have stayed safe from the virus.

4- I am still healthy as well.

5- I have found ways to increase my self esteem, little by little.

6- Despite how hard it has been, I am still here. I am still breathing. I haven't done anything to harm myself in any way.

7- I have learned and discovered new things, which is amazing for me because I love to learn.

8- I am looking for smarter ways to handle my finances.

9- I got some new books! Yay!!!

10- I am alive.

Being grateful every day is something new to me. I'm more used to complaining and sulking, which I'm not proud of but it's the truth. But I'm trying a new perspective now, and I think it suits me.

Back to my main point though, Christmas this year is going to be hard on us all. Everyone will be going through it in different ways, but it will certainly be difficult. Does that mean it will all be bad? I don't think so.

Today, while I put up my tree and decorate it, while I sing (horribly) to my Christmas music playlist, I'll be thinking of everything that Christmas brings, everything that it promises. We might not be able to be physically with everyone we love this year, and that hurts a lot, but that doesn't mean that same love is not present.

Speaking of love, I think it comes wrapped in many ways. Yesterday, I met with two of my best friends again. One of them I haven't seen since December 2019, and it felt like a full life had passed for how much I missed her. I know we shouldn't have, but that hug we shared was inevitable. Breathing suddenly became easier, smiles came more naturally, and some other sparks ignited in me. I didn't know just how I missed her till I saw her. She was my first real friend, and thanks to her I met my two other friends. I am eternally grateful for yesterday; I got to see her, hear her laugh again, share our day like we used to, and be happy together. We talk every single day, no exceptions, but I did need to see her. It's the first time since we met that we have spent so much time apart. So, if she's reading this, please know that I love you with every part of my soul, that I missed you terribly, and that I'm grateful for you every day.

I missed days like yesterday. I missed us, the three of us. I missed that love, that happiness. The three of us together felt right, perfect, as if time had never passed. I know that no matter what happens now, no matter the difficulties the three of us might go throw, we'll always stick together. Distance and time is nothing for people who love each other.

Love, no matter how it comes, will always be stronger than hate. Hope will always be stronger than fear. Yes, I am terribly afraid of everything that is to come; the future isn't written in stone, and this year is not over yet. And who knows what might happen in 2021... Today though, I choose to focus on the blessings I have. Today I choose to feel hopeful despite the circumstances. Today I choose light over darkness once again. With friends who love me by my side, my faithful cats, my books, my mom and a Christmas tree, this holiday season won't be as depressing as I thought it would be.

This Christmas, be grateful for what have and you don't. Love deeply, no matter what, and remember the true meaning of this holiday. Take care of yourself, and be gentle with your own process; your mental health is important, now more than ever. Take deep breaths and take time for yourself, it's important and it's going to help you- believe me, it will. I hope this Christmas is gentle for you, and that you may find happiness in whatever form it comes.

Have you ever struggled to find your house keys? Have you grown desperate with the search because you can't find those damn keys anywhere? Have you then realized you had them in your hands all along? Well... the same thing happens often with happiness.

Sending everyone a huge hug, and may the holidays begin!

P.S. I'm a cold hearted b**** when I want to be, so don't be fooled by all this loving thing.

My Love is Too...

For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide: Shange, Ntozake ...

Once in a while, when you least expect it, there comes something that changes your way of thinking. Something that takes the way you look at things and transforms it completely. For me it came in the shape of a little poetry book called "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf", by Ntozake Shange. It is a choropoem meant to be not only read but interpreted in theater. It consists of 21 poems, all narrated by one or several black women.

For Colored Girls...
Picture of the play "For Colored Girls..."

These poems talk about themes such as racism, sexism, abortion, abandonment, infidelity, aids, domestic violence, self love, sexuality, and the divinity that lives inside of us. The poems are narrated by seven women, all of them identified only by color, not by name. These are the lady in blue, lady in green, lady in brown, lady in purple, lady in red, lady in yellow, and lady in orange. Even though the poems are especially written for women, I decided to give them a chance. I didn't know what I would find, but in that uncertainty, I found... beauty, joy, words that seemed to understand me and everything I have been going through. I found a new way to look at myself.

Part of looking at myself in a new light involved not only what I found in this book, and what I found inside of me. It was also about how I expressed myself, how I made my exterior world reflect what was developing on the inside. I decided I wanted my house to reflect me, my identity, the subtle but significant changes that were happening to me. My house would no longer reflect other people, relatives who no longer live with me; my house would become my sanctuary and safe space.

To make my house look more like the person I was becoming, I decided I would paint phrases that would comfort me when I needed it the most. Feeling lonely most of the time can be hard to say the least, so these phrases would remind me of: who I am, what I want, what I deserve, and what I would never allow anyone to do to me ever again. Therefore, I took some of my favorite verses from "For Colored Girls...", the ones that spoke to me the most.

For colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow ...

One of my many flaws is that I can be quite unkind and even cruel with myself, and I can sometimes give my love to people who don't deserve it or don't know what to do with it. In this process, I often forgot that my love is not something trifle or unimportant, and that loving myself might be difficult but it's one of my most important tasks.

Considering this, I took the verses from the poem "No More Love Poems #4". I bought some acrylic paint and wrote each of these verses in several walls of my house, using the color of the lady reciting them. I watch these verses everyday, and they make me feel so warm and comforted. I remind myself everyday through these verses that I am enough, that I am art even if there is no one to appreciate it.

These verses are:

My love is too DELICATE to have thrown back on my face

I often pretend I am tougher than I really am. I can be cold, distant... I forget that my love is a delicate thing. It's not wrong to be vulnerable, and to harden myself too much would be the end of such love. I must protect my love of course, because it's delicate, but not so delicate that it can't come outside and show itself to the world.

My love is too BEAUTIFUL to have thrown back on my face:

My love is not something to be thrown to the curve. It isn't something to be forgotten, cast way like an old, ugly piece of furniture. My love is beautiful! My love is pure beauty, and it should be treated as such. My love is a precious jewel of high quality- period. Beauty of course is relative, but for me my love will always be precious.

Enough said.

My love is too SANCTIFIED to have thrown back on my face:

Long have I sought for what was missing in me, always thinking it was another person I should be looking for. It was only recently that I realized I don't have to look anywhere else, since I am the one I have been looking for. I have a divinity inside of me, full of power and grace. My love is sanctified, my love is pure because I found it in myself.

I called on the goddess & found her within myself..WILD WOMAN ...

My love is too MAGIC to have thrown back on my face:

Often I am rejected or looked down upon for the things that make me who I am. My love for books, my passion for music, my need for a deeper connection, my goals in life... these and many more things are the ones that make me the person I am. I am not hiding who I am anymore: my quirkiness, my eccentricity, my passion, my magic. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it, or be able to appreciate it.

MY DARLING GIRL, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO REALIZE THAT BEING NORMAL ...

My love is too SATURDAY NIGHT to have thrown back on my face:

My body is not something I am ashamed of anymore. I still crave a gentle and loving touch, a caring whisper at night, words full of love, and sometimes yes- a little bit of action and fun. My love involves my sexuality, the infinite experience of fulfillment and physical joy. Enjoying my body and sexuality is not wrong; my love can come with pleasure, and there is no shame in that.

My love is too COMPLICATED to have thrown back on my face:

I will not be silent about the things that bother me. I will never again be the victim to someone else's twisted idea of love. If speaking my mind makes me complicated, then so be it. My voice belongs to me only, and my life as well. Sometimes I want to be accompanied, and other times alone. Sometimes I want things to stay the way they are, and sometimes I just want to burn the world to the ground. I'm scared but I'm brave. I'm strong but at times I feel weak. Some days I feel I can take on the world, and others I just want to hide away. My storm is not something that can be tamed, only understood.

You said you liked storms so I let you in. Turns out you can only ...

My love is too MUSIC to have thrown back on my face:

Many times I have expressed my feelings through songs. They allow me to transmit my ideas in a better way. I have found myself in songs, I have related to their messages, and they have brought me comfort more times than I can count. My love is full of music; sometimes it's sad, others calm, or angry, melancholic, joyful, or romantic. This love of mine only moves to the rhythm of my own music, not anyone else's.

This house project of mine is not finished. I still have many other verses to write, verses that inspire me and remind me of the importance of self love. Verses that remind me there's more inside of me than what people can perceive, that there is so much more I can give. To summarize, these words send me a daily, constant message: as long as you have yourself to count on, there's nothing in this world that can stop you.

Even if poetry is not your favorite genre, I highly recommend you give "For Colored Girls..." a try. The messages presented in these poems are so much more than the ones I wrote about. You might even find something soothing for your soul, something that appeals to you personally. Whatever it is you find here, I hope it brings you as much joy as it brought to me. Thank you Ntozake Shange for everything you did for us all through your beautiful words; you'll never be forgotten.

Journey to the Past

Fireheart :))) | Throne of glass quotes, Throne of glass, Throne ...

Welcome back readers! For this Sunday's post, I will go into a personal reflection, based on my experiences during this weekend. To introduce this very quickly, I was having a very hard week. I began studying again, preparing to be a Montessori teacher, and let's just say this week made me cry more than once. I've had anxiety attacks, existential crisis and many moments of self-doubt. To make it short, I was being kicked in the butt.

How to Help Your Team with Burnout When You're Burned Out Yourself
Someday I'll sleep again.

On Friday, I received a message from a family group chat I'm in, reminding everyone of the small get-together they would be having on Saturday.

I was very hesitant to go, since I hadn't seen this part of my family around 12 or 13 years (give or take a few). But a part of me yearned for it. I can't explain it, but I felt a deep ache, a need to go. Blood calls for blood I guess. So, I got in my car and drove to their hometown, which is not as far from mine as I originally thought. I was so nervous; I couldn't stop shaking when I arrived and parked. I didn't know if they would recognize me, if they would accept me. After all, the last time I had being with them I was no older than 11. But then I saw them... and every bad feeling and doubt went away.

Now more than ever.

Going a little backwards, I used to stay with them for several days when I was a kid. They would come to my hometown and take me with them for weekends or a whole week. Those were the happiest days of my childhood. Every moment with them felt like an adventure. I was lighter than air, the sun shone brighter, the laughs were louder, and life was sweeter. I remember wishing those days would never end. I was away from school and my bullies, which was perfect. Plus, all of them were always so kind and caring. I've never found such kindness, love and passion for life anywhere else.

Sometimes I would feel Li... | Quotes & Writings by Gianni Vasquez ...

Don't get me wrong, I loved my family back at home too, especially and mostly my mother. But I was never close with this side of my family. There were too many secrets, coldness, pain and resentment. Everyone was very indifferent, and never close. My mom was my safe place, in many ways; she was an exception to all that coldness. Nevertheless, you can see there was a strong contrast between the two sides of my family. Probably you can understand why I cherished those days I was away so much.

It was a time of innocence. Pure and simple innocence. As long as I was in my uncle's arms, and I heard my aunt laugh, and I spent time with my cousins, I was safe. Nothing and no one could bother me. There were no problems, there was only peace. It was home.

Then, well... life happened, I guess. Responsibilities took over. We couldn't see each other so frequently anymore. I grew up like all children do. Life got harder, and we drifted apart. Even though we loved each other, we lost that connection for some years. As I grew up, I naturally lost that innocence. I matured, got my heart broken a couple of times, graduated from high school and then college, becoming a teacher; like they say in "Grey's Anatomy", life is a carousel and you can't stop it.

sillyjenny: It's awful being a grown up, but the carousel never ...

Now, going back to present day, I met with most of them again. I can say without a doubt that I haven't felt this happy in years. Seeing them together again, laughing, dancing, joking, it was as if I was 10 years old all over again. For those moments I didn't care about the damn virus. I needed those hugs like lungs need air. The first one I saw was my uncle, to whom I am closer than with most relatives. Let me tell you: that hug and that kiss from him made me feel like something on the inside was fixing, something I never realized was broken. After greeting him I saw my aunt, who is the one of the funniest and most lovable people I've ever met. I greeted and hugged my cousins- kind, sweet and fun as ever. In summary, I was home again.

There were no responsibilities, no pain, no fear, no cares. I lived in the present, without worrying for tomorrow. My heart was bursting out of my chest. I couldn't stop talking to them, hugging them; I needed them so much, I just never realized how so. We talked about our heartbreaks, our jobs, current events, other relatives, and I had an amazing conversation with one of my cousins about books! It was magic; every single second was pure magic.

Anastasia Journey To The Past Lyrics Video - YouTube

How can I describe what it really felt like? How can I explain how my heart felt just by watching them smile? How do I begin to describe how safe I felt in their arms? I felt so... ALIVE, as I haven't felt in years. Needless to say, when the time came for me to go back to my house, it was hard to say the least. As if I was being ripped from them again; I couldn't stop crying the way back home. It was such a bittersweet feeling, ripping me from the inside out. But I know this isn't the end.

Since now I have my car, I can visit them more often. We're already planning more days to see each other; for that I am eternally grateful and happy. I won't let so much time pass again without seeing them. When my summer classes finish, I sure as hell will go visit again. I hope for a future with them as bright as our past.

To summarize, I realized some very beautiful things; maybe deep down I knew them, but I needed to hear and experience them. I am more loved than I imagined, I am not alone, and no wound is so deep than it can't be healed with time and support. I also realized how much I missed and loved them, how much I longed for those days; as some people say, you never really know a moment's value until that moment becomes a memory. I just wish my grandfather was still with us so I could see him again as well.

Am I the Carrie Bradshaw of my Clique?

Pin by Zulmarie Melendez on People that I like | City quotes ...

Hello everyone! Welcome back to my blog. I see I have been receiving some visits, which makes me very happy. Today I come to talk briefly about one of my passions: "Sex and the City".

For those of you who might not know, "Sex and the City" is a television series inspired by a book of the same name by Candace Bushnell. It tells the story of four female friends named Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda, and their adventures living in New York City. During the series we see these women go to parties, meet and date men, explore their sexuality, grow as people, professionals and friends, and how they learn to love themselves more and more.

I am part of this group of friends, all female but me. I have to say I love them with all my heart. I won't mention their names, but they are also big fans of the series, and once we assigned the four main characters to each of us depending on our personalities and love lives.

One of them got Charlotte, for being the most artistic of the group, having a long and steady relationship, and being very sweet as the character. My other friend got Samantha, for reasons I won't discuss here; let's just say she loves her independence more than anything else. Last but not least, I've made an awesome new friend who got Miranda, because she always speaks her mind, she's sassy and super funny, and also has a very long standing relationship. But then I realized I was left with Carrie. I wondered, is this a good thing at all?

Carrie is, arguably, the one with the rockiest love life. At the same time, she enjoys great sex but can't help but long for that one true love; she's a hopeless romantic. She's also a writer who loves shopping beautiful clothes and fancy things. She loves being with her friends and finds in them the biggest support. To top it all, she's desperately in love with the devilish handsome Mr. Big, who entered her life and changed it forever.

The thing is, Carrie is not perfect (as any good character). She can be superficial, egotistic, somewhat impulsive regarding her feelings, and sometimes makes permanent decisions on temporal situations. And I have to say something I am not very glad to admit: I relate to her in more ways than I'd like. For the good part, I'm beginning to write here and I'm an English teacher, so I spend lots of time writing or reading. I love shopping beautiful things and clothes as long as I can afford them, and I'm a hopeless romantic who still enjoys the occasional date. But I can also be impulsive, I take rash decisions, and I can be a little arrogant.

So, I wonder: is being a Carrie a good thing? Am I ready to play this role? It's not like it's life mandatory, but I do see myself falling into this role more and more with my friends. We have sweet Charlotte, independent Samantha and sassy Miranda; am I the romantic Carrie? I am a hopeless romantic after all. I believe in romance, in dancing a waltz in my wedding. There would be white and pink flowers, my friends and family present, and a gorgeous Mr. Big by my side. This might seem great, but Carrie has a very unsteady love life in general. Am I doomed to have a bad love life as well? Is this a part of the character I can't avoid? Sometimes it seems like it.

Nevertheless, writing this has given me some perspective. Is being Carrie that bad? I say no. She may have a bad love life, but she learns from her mistakes and doesn't let them erase her smile. With her friends' help she learns to love herself before she loves anyone else. She continually makes progress in her career, she explores her sexuality shamelessly, and she can be humble enough (sometimes) to admit she was wrong and ask for forgiveness.

I take all the good and bad from Carrie, just as I am learning to accept all parts of me. I take her power and strength, her passion and sexuality, but most of all her love for herself and her friends. More than the love she has for Mr. Big, I will always keep in my heart the love she had for Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. Men can come and go, but good and real friends are forever. I am deeply grateful for the friends I have, who constantly show their support and love, and remind me that I'm not alone in this world.

And they also remind me that having fun between the sheets from time to time is not a bad thing at all.

With love,
Ema

P.S. Carrie Bradshaw, I sincerely hope I become as good as a writer like you someday.
